John met Kenneth 2 years ago in YFC’s Group Life ministry. In those early days Kenneth was trying to protect himself and had changed his identity; how he talked, how he dressed, how he acted, so that he would be safe. He was pushing off and pushing back every adult that was reaching out to him. When God came up he would laugh it off and shut it down.
For a time Kenneth even ran away. After he was picked up and moved to a new home he again ran into John. This time he appreciated being seen by someone he knew, and who he could trust, and who cared.
Right away Kenneth started going to church with the other kids from his home. Now just a few weeks ago Kenneth was at church hearing about baptism and following Jesus and decided he was ready. He was so excited to tell John about his decision. “I’m ready to make a change, I’m ready to follow God.” John was able to tell him how proud he was of him. It was a tender moment for Kenneth to hear that.
At the baptism his whole home came out and were cheering him on. Kenneth was excited and pumped up. John was so glad Kenneth could have this moment where he was loved and celebrated and where other kids could see his example.
Now John’s still visiting, still following up, and starting to talk about the future God has for him. Kenneth is discovering the adventure of following Jesus and he’s finding out that in God’s family, he’s never alone.
Congrats Kenneth! Keep following Jesus! “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” – Jesus, John 8:12
Thanks John for sharing the story and being faithful to walk with kids through all seasons.
